BCS Beware

Since Urban Meyer arrived in 2003, Utah’s football program has been great against BCS opponents, winning 11 of 15 games. In the same span, BYU has gone just 5-11 .
Still, it should be noted BYU was beating BCS-level teams long before Utah got the hang of it. The Cougars have defeated Michigan, Notre Dame, Miami, Texas, Penn State, Oklahoma and numerous other BCS teams, dating back to their glory days of the ’80s.
Utah should have beaten Michigan last week. If the Utes can’t beat the No. 6 or 7 team in the Big Ten, they shouldn’t complain about BCS elitism. Likewise, BYU is facing Washington, this week, a team expected to finish near the bottom of the Pac-10. It would be an upset for BYU to lose.
The era of being intimidated by teams based on the conferences they play in is over. Good MWC teams should beat bad Big Ten, Pac-10 and even SEC teams.
That’s one reason the Cougars can’t afford to lose to Washington this week. It’s about credibility.
Beat enough teams from BCS conferences and someone’s bound to listen.
Beat the best teams — if they can be scheduled — and the MWC has an argument.
