Sack Time
One of the disconcerting things for Utah football fans is that even though the Utes are 4-0, they haven’t yet played a complete game. And one of the big reasons for that is sacks.
Utah has allowed 12 sacks this year, for 89 yards. That is significant, because the Ute defense is good, yet has registered just eight sacks of its own.
Part of the “sack” problem is the offensive line, and part is due to QB Brian Johnson holding the ball too long and/or failing to dump it off when a play breaks down. Some blame may also be placed on receivers failing to run proper routes.
Whatever the reason, undefeated BYU has played great the last two weeks and the Cougars have yet to allow a sack all season.
All the best BYU teams through the years had fine offensive lines; they made their quarterbacks look good. A lot of them went on to play in the NFL.
If the Utes intend to remain undefeated, they’ll need to take a page from their rival and cut down the sacks.
