Taking Your Shot

Jeff Hornacek is back helping the Jazz with their shooting technique at this year’s training camp in Boise. Which makes sense. His instructions helped Andrei Kirilenko go from awful to respectable in 3-point scoring.
But at what point do you leave good enough alone? Carlos Boozer’s high-arching jump shoot looks weird, but it goes in. John Stockton’s trey came from his right shoulder. Jeff Malone took sliding, tumbling shots that most high school coaches would abhor — though he did always remember to square his shoulders.
The general rule of thumb in the NBA is that if the if shot is going in, leave it alone. The time for coaching the mechanics of shooting is when the ball is regularly clanging off the rim.
