BCS is Working — Ju-u-u-st Kidding

I’ve always felt the BCS was laughable; figured it was a collaboration of elite football conferences making sure they hoard all the money. I haven’t changed my opinion that a playoff would still be the greatest thing since the advent of cell phones.
Nevertheless, I’m starting to wonder about this whole thing.
I mean, really, TWO small fries (Utah and Boise State) in the top 10 of the BCS standings?
That’s actually OVER-rating them.
Its true the Utes have been gold in crunch time. Yet the combined records of their opponents is 54-50. Five of their 10 wins could easily have been losses.
I know all about this BCS business. It uses the Harris Interactive, USA Today Coaches Poll and the combined brainpower of six computer rankings. Wow. Smart.
So smart, in fact, that Utah is ranked ahead of Georgia, which has only lost to Alabama and Florida. Ahead of Missouri, which has only lost to Oklahoma State and Texas. Ahead of Ohio State, which has only lost to USC and Penn State. Ahead of Penn State, which has only lost to, well, all right, Iowa. And ahead of Oklahoma State, which has only lost to Texas and Texas Tech.
I have a strong suspicion Utah would lose to all of the above.
With BYU, Ball State, TCU and Tulsa also in the top 20, you can’t say the BCS is exactly squelching the little guys.
So the BCS is improving. Still, it remains exclusionary. If the small fries win all their games and jump through enough hoops, then they can be invited to a BCS bowl. All the teams from big conferences need to do is win.
I said Utah would probably lose to Georgia, Missouri, Ohio State, Penn State and Oklahoma State.
I’d love to see if the Utes could prove me wrong.
Bring on a playoff system.
Which takes me to another point: The most interesting team in the Beehive State this year isn’t Utah or BYU. It’s Weber State. Which WILL be able to decide its own destiny, thanks to the I-AA playoffs.
