Cougars Have a Sense of Humor, Too
Media outside Utah often seem to want to label BYU’s football program as a bunch of button-down, married, straight-laced, humorless people.
Truth is, BYU has always had some funny, colorful guys on its football team. Really funny. Hans Olsen, now a 1280-AM radio personality, tells of eating chicken wings and telling the coaches he thought he was in trouble because he ate 10 wings, but there were only nine bones on his plate. Rob Morris visited Graceland and ceremoniously kissed the grave of Elvis.
The list goes on. Though not as laugh-out-loud funny, Bryan Kehl was a truly interesting guy who always answered questions forthrightly — which sometimes got him more publicity than he wanted. Bob Davis loved to helmet-butt teammates. Dan ‘Pluto’ Plater used to to goad volatile teammate Lloyd Jones into losing his temper by suggesting LaVell Edwards wasn’t passing to him enough.
Former Cougar center Jason Scukanec suggested BYU use an offensive guard to run the ball back in 2001.
‘Isaac J. Herring (offensive guard),’ said Scukanec. ‘That’s who they need to put in the backfield.
No. 73. I’m calling out Coach Crowton right now. Why haven’t they done it earlier? Why aren’t they doing it right now? That solves that problem. Luke who? Isaac J. Herring. Five yards a carry, guaranteed. Won’t find a better blocking back in the country. Weighs 330 pounds, and he runs a sub-five 40.”
I’ve always liked Austin Collie. Sure, he’s said some slightly controversial stuff, but he says what he thinks, answering honestly. People can take it however they like.
While Utah has had some colorful people, too, if you want to compare big personalities over the years, I’ll take the Cougars any time.
