Texas, Schmexas,
I watched the Fiesta Bowl, last night, and saw Texas come back to beat Ohio State.
But nothing happened in that game to convince me Utah couldn’t beat either team. I’ll consider it an injustice if the final rankings put Texas ahead of Utah.
Would Utah beat Texas, Oklahoma, USC or Florida head-to-head? If they played any of them 10 times, I doubt the Utes would win more than three or four. But that’s beside the point. Utah COULD beat any of those teams in a single game. And deserves the chance.
Which gets back to my contention a playoff is the only fair way to decide championships.
On a related note, I’ve heard a number of people grumbling that its “too bad Utah couldn’t have played Texas in the Fiesta Bowl.”
Alabama was ranked No. 1 longer than any team in the country this year. I don’t think the Utes would have made a stronger statement by playing Texas or USC than they did playing Alabama.
They had as good a match-up as they could have hoped — barring a shot at the national title.
