Toughening up USU schedule

USU is at it again, with a 17-1 men’s basketball record, including 5-0 in the WAC. Looks like the Aggies are headed to their 10th straight post-season appearance.
But considering they have won just one post-season game since 1970 (2001), you have to wonder if anything has changed.
USU has won 23 or more games in each of the last nine years. The bad part is it hasn’t played many games to get the Aggies ready for the post-season. Everyone plays patsies. But while Utah and BYU are also playing teams like Wake Forest, Arizona State, LSU and Gonzaga, the Aggies don’t have much of anyone on the schedule this year, except, well, Utah and BYU. Included on this year’s non-conference slate: Montana State-Northern, Howard, Houston Baptist and Cal State-Bakersfield.
Last year was a bit better with Iowa and Vanderbilt, but the schedule also included Austin Peay, Prairie View A&M and Montana Western.
Each year, USU goes into the post-season and loses. Part of that is seeding, but another part is that the Aggies need to play tougher regular season competition to prepare it for the post-season. Losing to Arizona, Michigan and Kansas is one thing, but losing to Montana State, Hawaii and Illinois State is another.
The feeling here is that USU could benefit by subbing in a few games against Big 12, Pac-10 or SEC teams, rather than playing so many Prairie Views and MSU-Northerns. Agreed?
