College Hoops: Why It's Not As Big
What’s hurting college basketball?
I’m not one of those that believes the sport is dead yet. Not by a long shot. Few sports are growing in popularity.
But college basketball used to be a hot ticket. Now that’s the case in only in a few places.
Locally, interest has slowed, too. Only around 12,000 showed up for Tuesday’s Utah-BYU game at the Huntsman Center. Sure, it was an awkward time to play (8 p.m. on a weeknight). And neither team is having a great season.
Still.
Although Utah’s losses to Southwest Baptist and Idaho State didn’t help, BYU fans used to buy up all the extra tickets — if there were any.
Not anymore.
So what do you think the reason for the decline in interest in college basketball in Utah is?
1.The best players are leaving early for the pros (i.e. Trent Plaisted, Andrew Bogut, etc.).
2.TV coverage makes it easier to stay home.
3.The game is too slow.
4.The regular season doesn’t matter.
5.The Jazz are more interesting.
6.You have less expendable income.
7. The teams aren’t all that good.
