Utah's Mt. Rushmores

ESPN.com is looking for athletic titans from every state.

Actually, it’s calling for 52 “Mt. Rushmores” by having readers vote on iconic sports figures from their state.

Utah’s nominations are John Stockton, Karl Malone, Steve Young and LaVell Edwards — which should sit well with BYU and Jazz fans, not so well with Ute and Aggie fans.

Edwards not only won for decades as a coach, but he has a face that belongs on Mt. Rushmore. A great case can be made for the other three, as well.

But there others who could be argued. How about Ty Detmer, the Heisman winner? Or Billy McGill, the Utah basketball player who was picked No. 1 in the 1962 NBA Draft? Or, for that matter, another pair of Ute No. 1 picks, Andrew Bogut (NBA) and Alex Smith (NFL)?

What about Super Bowl quarterback Jim McMahon?

Other possibilities are USU and Olympic discus star Jay Sylvester, Aggie hoops greats Cornell Green (who went on to the NFL) and Wayne Estes, and Natalie Williams, the Olympic and WNBA basketball sensation.

And don’t forget world class softball pitcher/Jazz owner Larry H. Miller or middleweight world boxing champ Gene Fullmer.

Who would you vote as your Mt. Rushmore of Utah sports?
