U. Coach: An Emotional Tsunami

Jim Boylen is a feelings-on-his-shirtsleeve kind of guy.

The Utah basketball coach cried through most of the ceremony and post-game press conference, Saturday, after the Utes tied for the conference title.

“I don’t know how to explain it,” he said, when asked about the show of emotions a coach gets after winning a championship in just his second year at Utah. He went on to say he played eight years of high school and college basketball and has been coaching 22 years.

“This is my fifth title in 30 years,” he said. “So they don’t come around very often. You don’t know when they’ll come around.”

He added that the difficulty of the Mountain West competition made winning a title even better.

Considering the rush of feeling he showed on Saturday, what do you think might happen if he gets to the Sweet 16? Is he too emotional? Could it work against him as the years pass, or is strong emotion an asset for a coach?
