Springing Into Action
Now that Franklin Covey Field has been renamed Spring Mobile Ballpark, this is as good a time as any to start working on nicknames, or shortened names. You know, like “The Cell” in Chicago or “The Swamp” in Gainesville.
The obvious first answer is “The Spring.” Other possibilities are “SpringMo” and “SMB.”
Any other suggestions?
While we’re on the subject of the ballpark, the Salt Lake franchise (Buzz and Bees) has won eight home openers since the old Dirks Field was razed and the new park put in, including four straight (2004-07). Since 1994, when the new park was dedicated, it has attracted 7,832,194 fans.
And finally, who says they don’t drink beer in Utah? Last year at Franklin Covey Field, 147,400 beers were sold. It was the top-selling concessions item, outstripping even soda (141,760), hot dogs (115,642) and bottled water (45,804).
Ice cream, a Utah favorite, could do no better than fifth place, with 24,914 dishes of the stuff served.
