Before I was so Rudely Interrupted…
Now that the basketball season is over, I can get to the non-Jazz columns I’ve been wanting to do.
Except the ones that have already come and gone. Like USU play-by-play man Al Lewis being inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame. And former Ute Lance Allred playing wonderfully in the NBADL. And Tyrone Corbin’s son playing for West High’s state championship basketball team.
I missed spring football almost entirely. I wanted to go to BYU and do a column on Max Hall, but Dick Harmon beat me to it. I planned on doing a column on Gary Andersen but USU spring football ended before I could get it done.
I did make it to one Utah practice, but that’s all.
Believe it or not, I wanted to do a column on the season opener of the Salt City Derby Girls roller derby league.
So many columns, so little time.
The NCAA and NBA late- and post-seasons can sideline a lot of good story ideas. Last year I entirely missed the Salt Lake Bees’ 21-1 start. Didn’t get available until the streak was over. Similarly, this year I missed a great column when RSL beat New England 6-0 in a game coach Jason Kreis said was “almost flawless.”
How many times do you see a 6-0 soccer game? As often as you see a 21-1 start on a baseball season, I guess.
Fact is, stories that find their way into print are partly due to timing. If you’re trying to get in the news, don’t play games when there’s a lot of competition for coverage.
Now would be a better time to do something significant.

In the weird but true department comes this admission: Former USU tight end Chris Cooley doesn’t know much about the Internet.
In fact, he doesn’t even have access to it.
Cooley told Sportsillustrated.com that due to lack of cable lines in his area, he has no Internet service. Yet his web site, Chriscooley47.com, includeS one of the most well read athlete blogs around.
Asked about his computer skills, the Washington Redskins tight end told SI: I’m gonna be honest with you. Tanner (his brother) runs it. I don’t even know my password. He’s shown it to me and I’ll give him my status updates and he’ll post them.”
