Heaps of Charisma
And he’s smart, too.
We know from the videos that BYU recruit Jake Heaps can play football. But in handling media questions, Tuesday, he showed he is composed, friendly and well spoken. Asked about his plans for an LDS mission, he merely said he was still weighing that consideration. When someone asked him he felt “obligated” to go to BYU since he’s LDS, he said no, that religion was just one factor that went into his decision.
One of the cleverest responses was when asked who was his favorite BYU quarterback.
“I know he wants me to say it right now, so I’ll pick (quarterbacks coach) Brandon Doman,” said Heaps.
Touching all his bases, Heaps also went on to praise former Cougar and current Washington Huskies’ coach Steve Sarkisian as a quarterback. Washington was Heaps’ second choice.
Heaps allowed he was taken aback by the boisterous crowd that showed up at Iggy’s Sports Grill in downtown, Thursday, to ring in the announcement.
“I had a whole speech prepared, but didn’t gt time to give it, this was so overwhelming,” he said. “But it shows me how great a fan base BYU has.”
Heaps has prior connections to BYU. He said hs sister and brother in law attended BYU and that his father played baseball for the Cougars.
Asked if he thinks BYU can become a BCS power, he said, “I do. I think so. BYU has a great program and hopefully it can continue that tradition that BYU is about.”
