Urban Part Deaux
Never having been one to pass up a gift, I’m not above using former Ute coach Urban Meyer in more than one blog in the same week.
Earlier this week I wrote about Meyer denying he wants to be coach at Notre Dame. Now it’s Meyer saying he doesn’t think the Utes could compete in a league as tough as the SEC. He told Paul Gattis of the Huntsville Times as much, saying, “I know (Utah Senator) Orrin Hatch. They’re doing what they’re supposed to do. They’re fighting for their team and their state and I can’t argue with them. The Utah team (last) year and the Utah team we had in ’04, I don’t think they can survive the grind of the SEC.”
He also had some interesting things to say about his former defensive coordinator and now Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham.
“But there are other conferences out there who can’t survive the grind, either,” he continued. “I can’t disagree. I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that or not. I certainly listen to them because I know them and I know their coach (Kyle Whittingham). To tell me he’s not a BCS coach or those aren’t BCS players, that’s not true.”
Meyer is a great coach and a decent guy. He’s also a politician. Wherever he’s gone, he’s talked up his program and how good the competition is. For the moment, he’s all about Florida.
Which gives me an idea for something he can do when he retires from coaching (which he once said would be before he’s 50): Politics.
Senator Urban Meyer.
You have to admit, it has a ring to it.
