King Louie Returns

Louie Sakoda has always had his head on straight. He was never your stereotypical loopy kicker.

Now there’s proof.

Sakoda showed up at first day of fall football camp at the University of Utah, Wednesday, looking, well, normal. He chatted with media and teammates, not the least bit morose. If he had been, he couldn’t have been blamed. Arguably the nation’s best kicker, last season, he went undrafted this spring. He had a look or two from teams, but as he put it, “their rosters were set.”

One of the problems is that NFL teams have few openings for kickers. That’s because they sometimes play into their 40s. Speed and age aren’t nearly as much a factor as at other positions. He had good but not phenomenal range as a placekicker. Meanwhile, he didn’t bowl teams over at the combines.

Sakoda said he was planning on going back to school to finish his degree (he has a year left). His original plan was to get his degree in marketing, but now he’s considering switching to entrepreneurship.

“Maybe it’s a good time to get on with my life,” he said matter-of-factly.

Sakoda is thinking of starting a business that has a line of clothing.
