Me and the Phillies
Ever wonder how they get those tee shirts that say “New York Yankees, World Series Champs!” on the streets within minutes of the final pitch?
Wonder no longer.
They print up shirts with each teams as winner.
The correct tee goes on sale, the incorrect one goes to charity.
“Phillies 2009 World Series Champs” tees will be donated to needy children in Indonesia, this year.
So if you’re on the other side of the planet, and you see an erroneous tee shirt, don’t get indignant.
I know all about this stuff. Embarrassing but true story: Back when I was the Jazz beat writer, a local entrepreneur and friend of mine decided it would be a good idea to print up some “Rockmonster” tee shirts. I told him I hadn’t seen anyone wearing a Jeff Malone shirt, so I doubted anyone would want one that said Rockmonster on the front. He said he’d foot the bill, so I said fine by me; knock himself out.
He made up some tees – two or three dozen, as I recall – and got them placed in one or two tee shirt shops around town.
To make a short story even shorter, last I heard of the shirts, they, too had been donated to a youth charity.
So I guess I’m in good company.
