A Wynning Formula
Backup Ute quarterback Terrance Cain didn’t look happy, after Utah’s loss to TCU, Saturday night.
In fact, he looked downright ticked. With good reason. He didn’t see a down of action against the Horned Frogs. That has to be hard to take for a guy who started eight games. And especially since the Utes got creamed, 55-28.
Cain had to be wondering: How come they didn’t try me?
It’s a good question. Once the Utes were down 35-7 in the early second quarter, it was clear the game was over. Starter Jordan Wynn wasn’t playing great, though he had some good moments before the final horn.
You could make an argument that once the outcome was apparent – in the second quarter – coach Kyle Whittingham should have put in Cain, to see what he could do. But I figure Wynn is the quarterback of the future. The more experience he can get before the game against BYU and the bowl game, the better.
So yes, the contest was over early against TCU. And yes, Cain might have done better than Wynn, though that’s debatable. Either way, he wasn’t going to win it for the Utes. They were outplayed in a lot of positions besides quarterback. Best to let Wynn play through his growing pains.
Anyone else have an opinion on the subject?
