A.I. and the Jazz

I was surprised to hear Allen Iverson’s name mentioned in the same breath as Jerry Sloan’s, during Thursday night’s game against the Bulls.

TBS commentators put up a graphic that listed teams that could benefit by signing the 34-year-old A.I. to a contract. The theme was “opposites attract.”

Yeah, he still has some mileage in the tank. But Sloan wouldn’t be able to get along with a shoot-first player who doesn’t want to attend practice. Nor is Sloan likely to want a player who tends to make news off the court, as well as on.

The one things that makes it even interesting is that Jazz G.M. Kevin O’Connor was player personnel director for the 76ers when Iverson played there.

Still, looking at some of the players the Jazz signed near the end of their careers doesn’t make the prospect of signing Iverson look promising: Tom Chambers, James Donaldson, Tm Gugliotta, Brevin Knight and Olden Polynice.

Even Derek Fisher was erratic and only helped some of the time.

My advice for the Jazz is if Iverson’s agent calls, hang up.

Better yet, don’t even pick up.
