Paging Kyle Korver
The teenage girls go crazy over him. For that matter, so do the middle-aged and senior citizens.
Kyle Korver is a popular player in Utah.
Remaining that way, though, is going to require better shooting than he’s shown lately.
Korver got back on track, a little bit, in Game 6, Friday night, going 3-7 from the field. But that just put him at 4-for-18 in the last three games. Before Friday, he had made just one of his previous 11 shots.
The Jazz have to make their shots and draw out the defense if they’re to have a chance against the Lakers. And Korver is an important part of that equation. In a sense, you have to feel sorry for him. The man’s a career shooter. But it can’t be easy playing in the Jazz system, where he’s called on to shoot as a third option, because there are few plays designed for him. Beyond that, it’s hard to get in a rhythm when you come in cold, come out for awhile, then come back in.
Especially for a player who makes his living off pure shooting.
While injuries slowed Korver this year, and kept him out of 30 games, it’s interesting to note his shot total this year (280) is by far the fewest of his career. He played just 50 games for the Jazz after being acquired in 2007-08, yet managed to get 348 shots.
Some of this is obvious. Aside from injuries that sidelined him this year, he was playing with a bad team in Philly. There was no Deron Williams or Carlos Boozer to do the scoring. So he got more tries. Still, reading between the lines when talking to him, it seems clear he’d like to be more involved. It also seems obvious the last few playoff games that he’s rushing his shots, hoping to shoot his way into some more minutes. Instead, it has kept his percentage down.
