BCS available to small fries, but title isn't
Makeovers work. Just ask Kobe Bryant or Britney Spears.
College football is experiencing several makeovers of its own. Boise State, heretofore regarded as a small-fry school in a silly conference, is ranked third nationally. TCU is rated 4th in the A.P. poll and Utah 14th.
For the Utes, that’s a six-place jump in the polls.
While it’s true that five teams ranked ahead of the Utes lost last week, the point is this: Since when did the Utes jump six places in the polls after beating UNLV?
This kind of leap speaks to two things. First, voters are paying attention to the TCUs, Boises and Utahs of the world a lot sooner than previously. Meanwhile, the Utes’ inclusion in the future Pac-12 has to help. Voters are looking at the results and saying, “Well, they’re in the Pac-12, they must be pretty good.”
The way the Utes’ schedule is set up, they could be high in the polls by the time they hit the tough part of their season. If they play well, they should win their next five games (New Mexico, San Jose State, Iowa State, Wyoming and Colorado State), which would make them 7-0 going into the Air Force game on Oct. 30.
November’s schedule includes TCU, Notre Dame, SDSU and BYU.
The biggest thing Utah, TCU and Boise State have done in earning BCS bowl invitations is make themselves visible. They show up in the preseason polls more often, move up quicker and get more respect than ever.
Still, they haven’t overcome the biggest hurdle – getting to the national title game. Some say Boise is perfectly positioned, but I disagree. The national title game is based on the top rated teams in the BCS computer rankings, not the A.P. poll. And the BCS computer ranking includes strength of schedule.
Even if Boise goes undefeated, I don’t see it getting ranked No. 1 or 2 in the BCS poll when the remainder of its schedule includes Oregon State, Wyoming and a bunch of WAC teams.
The Broncos have made major headway.
But going all the way to the title?
I still don’t believe the BCS is going to let it happen.
