Jan Jorgensen's MMA Debut
For those listeners of 1280-The Zone who can’t get enough of “The Red and Blue Show” starring Kyle Gunther and Jan Jorgensen, rest easy. That’s not going away soon, at least if Jorgensen has any say.
Talking with him about his upcoming mixed martial arts bout with Jerzy Siewierski, I asked Jorgensen if he planned to compete full time in MMA. His answer was “I hope so, but I don’t intend to really go away from radio while I’m doing it. As long as I win and do well, hopefully the sky’s the limit. I don’t intend to make it a hobby. I’m the kind of person that when I do something, I try to do my best.”

Along those lines, I asked him what hurts the worst in MMA. You can get kicked in the head, tossed on your back, punched in the face and a variety of other things.
“To be honest, a good body shot is the worst,” he said. “A good body shot that you’re not expecting probably hurts worst – more than the face.”
Funny, because in the movies, the body shot almost always looks like an afterthought.
I also asked Jorgensen if he felt nervous about his MMA debut.
“I don’t feel a whole lot of butterflies yet,” he said. “But I’m starting to feel the urgency and I’m training as much as I can. But it’s hard to feel ready. I’ve never done this before, so I’m not sure if you ever feel ready for your first fight. I’m sure as the day gets closer, I will.”
Lastly on Jorgensen, I asked if he had a nickname picked out. This is a sport that cries out of some sort of dramatic moniker like Jan “Crusher” or “True Blue” Jorgensen.
“I don’t have a nickname, we’ll probably do something on the (radio) show,” he said. “Maybe the listeners can pick out a nickname for me.”
Also on the Sept. 24 fight card is former Cottonwood High, Snow College and Dixie State football player Josh Burkman. Here’s a link to a story I did on him in 2005.
