Utah's Cain: Never Give Up

Most of us have had a time when we wanted to tell the boss where to go.

Which leads me to the question I asked Ute quarterback Terrance Cain, this week. I wanted to know if he had ever been tempted to tell off coach Kyle Whittingham and his team, after the starting job was handed to Jordan Wynn.

I said: “Do your friends or anyone else ever tell you that you should just say ‘The heck with it’ and give up?”

“I get friends back at home are always telling me, ‘Why you doing it? If you can do it, you’re a better man than me. But my family tells me to just pray and keep my faith up. My teammates, too, are always picking me up.”

This might be bordering on cheesy, but Cain even claims his competition (Wynn) is in his corner.

“Even Jordan is out there picking me up,” he said.

If that is the case, Kyle Whittinham has reached a place where few coaches succeed – getting almost everyone to buy into his plan. One thing Jazz coach Jerry Sloan does particularly well is to get his star players to accept his style and system. That apparently is the case with Whittingham, as well. Any time you can get someone who is 9-1 as a starter to accept being second string, you’re doing something right.

As a side note, Cain went on to say that selfishness has no part in his plan.

“My family’s all about caring, all about giving, all about love. My mom always taught me to give more than I’m taking.”
