Ute Stadium expansion, more
If you go in the Ute football locker room — which I don’t often do, because it’s normally closed to the media — you’ll find two things.
First, their lockers have been improved. The beat-up old lockers have been replaced with nicer, dark wood ones. Interestingly, I learned this week that Kyle Whittingham actually used some of his own money to put the new lockers in a year or two ago. Also, there is a Ute drum-and-feather logo on the carpeted floor. It is separated by a velvet rope to keep anyone from walking on it…
I also learned this week that plans are in the works for eventual stadium expansion. There’s no specific timetable, but when it happens, it will involve filling in the south end zone. At that time, the U. will replace the old, gloomy locker rooms, too. As nice as the stadium is, the locker rooms are strictly second rate…The Ute Field Turf has only been in operation a couple of years and cost of $750,000-$1 million. But the turf is supposed to last 10 years….Boise State used measurements and details from Rice-Eccles Stadium for its new press box….Last time I talked to A.D. Chris Hill about stadium expansion, he said it’s on his list, but not at the top. That makes sense. A good indication of whether expansion is necessary is whether people come on years the Utes aren’t great. The Utah crowd has always been fairly fickle that way.
