Disturbing Boise fans and bad calls

It’s getting scary out there.

There have always been fanatics in sports, hence the term “fans.”

Maybe the West is just catching up with other parts of the country. But I found it disturbing to read that Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman is getting so much grief for missing the two field goals against Nevada.

True, he choked on a couple of makable kicks, but he’s not a pro. He’s a college kid.

Ute fans know in a small way the feeling Boise State fans have. Remember Ryan Kaneshiro clanging the field goal against BYU? He happened to miss the biggest kick of his life – but his didn’t have a possible BCS title game riding on it. Then-coach Ron McBride even said Kaneshiro was on the team to do one thing and he didn’t do it. Fair enough.

At the same time, relentless hounding is not only unfair, it’s creepy. Same thing applies to politics. Once the elections are over, the main objective should be to move the country forward, not hound the elected officials until they’re out of office.

Winning is great, but when it doesn’t happen, people need to get a life.

The Brandon Bradley fumble/down issue in the BYU-Utah game was certainly debatable, which is exactly why the play wasn’t overturned. It can’t just be debatable, it has to be irrefutable.

People need to remember that any reviewed call must provide “irrefutable evidence” that the officials made the wrong call. Those are strong words. If there’s any margin for doubt, then the call can’t be reversed.

The hard part of any disputed play is that most people are viewing it through their fan goggles.

I didn’t view it through anything. I was on the press box elevator, headed to the field for the last part of the game and missed the play. But I’ve been hearing of it ever since.
