Rose Bowl Outcome: New Angle, Please
I know it’s bowl season and it’s hard coming up with original material.
But please, no more.
No more questions about “winning one for the little guys.”
Saturday’s Rose Bowl made an interesting scenario, TCU vs. Wisconsin. But before, during and after the Horned Frogs’ win, viewers were subjected to repeated references of TCU fighting for the little guys.
Afterward, no fewer that two separate ESPN interviewers asked TCU players and coaches about winning one for the little people of college football.
First, it’s a dumb storyline. Utah broke the “little guys” barrier six years ago when it beat Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl. Boise State has won two BCS bowls, Utah two and TCU one.
It’s not a new story.
Beyond that, TCU is headed to the Big East, Utah to the Pac-12. NEWS FLASH TO ESPN: THEY AREN’T LITTLE GUYS ANY MORE! If they were, they wouldn’t be headed to AQ conferences.
Actually, the entire concept of winning for all the little guys is nonsensical – even though TCU coach Gary Patterson said as much. TCU was playing for TCU, not Boise and not Utah. Did Utah worry about BYU when it left for the Pac-12? Was BYU looking out for CSU and New Mexico when it went independent? Were the Frogs looking out for Air Force and UNLV when they went to the Big East? No. They were looking out for themselves. If it helps out the others, fine. If it doesn’t fine there, too.
For awhile, the little guy angle was cute. It was interesting when Utah beat Pitt and Boise beat Oklahoma. It was tolerable when Utah beat Alabama.
Now it’s just annoying.
For ESPN and all of the rest of the media: FIND ANOTHER ANGLE. This one is played out.
