BYU, RSL "Worst Champions"
I know it’s the Internet era and this is a little late.
OK, it’s a lot late (7 weeks).
I don’t read Bleacher Report every day.
Still, I found this item interesting: Two teams from Utah made someone’s list of the “50 Worst Teams Ever to Win a Championship.”
The list includes the 1984 BYU Cougars, who won the national title in football and Real Salt Lake’s 2009 MLS Cup victory. It rates the Cougars No. 17 on their list of worst championship teams.
“The 1984 BYU Cougars started the season unranked, but that quickly changed after they beat consensus top-10-ranked Pittsburgh,” begins the description. “However, that was the only win over a ranked opponent for the Cougars all season. They did finish the season undefeated, but the quality of opponents that they faced was not championship caliber.”
It goes on to rank RSL No. 12 on the list of surprise champions, having finished the regular season with a losing record and becoming the final team to qualify for the playoffs.
While both teams deserve praise for achievement, I can’t say I disagree with the assessment that they weren’t the best teams in the country those years.
But as the saying goes, “SCOREBOARD!”
