Additional remarks by Weber State athletic director Jerry Bovee: “I think that for us, the biggest thing is that when the music stops,we make sure we’ve got a seat at the party. Right now there’s so much going on. A telling sign was when Montana had an opportunity to go to the WAC and decided to stay in the Big Sky.”
“I think bigger is not always better. Some teams that went from FCS to FBS are still floundering, trying to make their way in the world, still trying to find their identity. We certainly wouldn’t want to do that. It wouldn’t make sense.”
On UVU’s bid to join the WAC: “UVU is different in my mind, because there’s not football, so for them, the WAC is probably the right move for them. The WAC added non-football schools this summer and for UVU it would help if they could play in a more regional conference against teams in the same time zones.”
On Montana potentially moving to FBS status: “Some people maintain that with 30,000 season tickets, national championships, why not make the move? There are a lot of things to consider. They’re probably in a position to do it if they desired to do it. But there’s a fear factor there. Can you make the move and continue your winning ways like Boise State, or make the move and struggle like many have.”
