Fredette Owns San Diego
The stories say BYU’s Jimmer Fredette has owned San Diego State. True enough. Though not his best game, Saturday, he did end up with 25 points in the Cougar win.
Thanks to some stat work by sports researcher Orvill Paller, we learn that Fredette’s 43 points against the Aztecs on Jan. 26 was the best game ever by a Cougar against SDSU. Danny Ainge was second, scoring 37 against the Aztecs on Jan. 8, 1981.
Paller notes that SDSU’s Kim Goetz turned in the best scoring performance ever by an Aztec against BYU, on March 2, 1979. That year, Goetz went for 38 points.
Fredette’s 194 total points is the most by either team in the series. Second-highest scorer in the series is Ainge, who had 188 points.
The all-time scoring leaders vs. the Aztes is a who’s who of Cougars. In order, they are Fredette, Ainge, Michael Smith (166), Devin Durrant (148), Fred Roberts (122), Russell Larson (120) and Jeff Chatman (113).
Top all-time Aztec scorers, in order: Anthony Watson (157), Lorrenzo Wade (139), Michael Cage (125)and Brandon Heath (107).
