Forfeiting BYU's 1980 Holiday Bowl win

Old wounds never heal.

I got this e-mail today from a marketing guy claiming that Jim McMahon’s honor code violations should cause the 1980 Holiday Bowl to be forfeited by BYU.

The e-mail went thusly (with a few edits for brevity):

Official request to have Holiday Bowl win of 1980 Rescinded

Brad,
As the unofficial representative from SMU who witnessed the “greatest comeback in BYU history” in the 1980 Holiday Bowl <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b55Tn_YbLK8
” target=”_blank”>youtube.com, I would like to request that this game be forfeited due to a recent admission from Jim McMahon that he broke the BYU honor code while he was at BYU.

The following comments were captured by ProFootballTalk.com:

McMahon had an interesting answer when asked about BYU basketball player Brandon Davies, who was suspended from the team this season, reportedly for violating the school’s honor code by having premarital sex. McMahon said he had a simple method for maintaining his football eligibility when he played at BYU: “You had to find girls who kept their mouths shut.”

With this clear admission and the fact that the BYU honor code has no “statute of limitations” all of us who attended the SMU/BYU game in 1980 will gladly accept the win. And truth be told, we had our own indiscretions which we paid mightily for the next 30+ years after the NCAA instituted the death penalty.

Thank you for helping bring this atrocity to light.

Sincerely,
Warren Zeller
SMU class of 1979

So what do you think?
Is this guy on to something or just “on something?”
