Lobo player's sagging pants: Don't be a lone wolf

I don’t text a lot, usually fewer than a half-dozen times a day. But a month ago I was in San Diego with my wife. We were on the USS Midway, waiting for the tour to start. That’s when I got a text from my daughter.

As I was answering her, the tour guide began talking. But before I could shut down my phone, he walked over next to me and said something like this, for the whole group could hear: “We have a situation here. Either you’re going to shut down that phone or we’re not going to continue the tour.”

I thought of explaining that I was midway through the text when he started. I considered telling him to bring it up with the Commander in Chief. Mostly, I wanted to tell him I’d been on aircraft carriers before and didn’t want to see his boring tour in the first place. (My wife wanted to go.)

Instead, I just shut off the phone and put it in my pocket, since I didn’t want to end up in the brig and didn’t want to impose on the other tour members.

That was the end of it.

I bring this up because last week New Mexico defensive back Deshon Marman was arrested and removed from a US Airways flight for allegedly refusing to pull up his pants, which sagged below his buttocks. The plane was delayed 1 hours.

DESHON MARMAN

A big deal has been made of this incident. Some say it was a case of Marman’s dress being offensive to passengers who didn’t want to look at his exposed seat. Others said it was merely a fashion statement. One passenger told the San Francisco Chronicle that airlines tolerate women with low jeans and exposed underwear and/or cleavage, or overweight people whose exposed backsides can be seen when they lean over. Why make an issue out of this?

Rather than debate the finer (lower) points, I say why not just pull up his pants, for the same reason I put away my cell phone: so the show can get on the road.

Then if he still has a problem, bring it up in court.
