BYU won't separate football, religion

Much has been discussed since assistant football coach Joe DuPaix said this summer that he expected BYU to expand its recruiting pool to include more like-minded non-LDS players.
But on Tuesday coach Bronco Mendenhall reiterated the makeup of the team isn’t likely to change dramatically.
Mendenhall said the Cougars currently have seven non-LDS players. At times, he said, there have been as many as 15, “so that range is about where we’re gong to stay.”
He noted at football media day that he is finding recruits who are not LDS but are looking for schools with an honor code.
The BYU coach went on to say the “main reason to go independent” in football is “for exposure for the (LDS) Church.”
He said to not have football strongly tied to the LDS Church “doesn’t make sense to me.”
“Football alone is not enough,” he said.
