Player pay not necessary, says Utah A.D.

Pay-for-play in college athletics?

It doesn’t sound like a great idea to Utah director of athletics Chris Hill.

Meeting with a few media members for lunch on Wednesday, he was asked about whether players should get paid for playing. He acknowledged that for great college players, getting paid might seem a reasonable request.

However, he said, “marginal players,” getting their tuition, room and board paid for by the university “is a good deal.”

He went on to claim that 98 percent of players aren’t good enough to play in the NFL and thus receive adequate reward for playing at the college level.

Hill was asked whether he stresses out prior to football games, or remains relaxed.

He said, “When the game starts, I always think we’re going to win. But all day tomorrow (until game time) I’ll think we’re going to lose.”
