Dialing down Y., U. expectations
This reality moment is sponsored by Rockmonster Unplugged: Utah and BYU are good teams, just not great.
If anything, last weekend’s losses showed that both teams can play at a high level. The Cougars led Texas before falling 17-16, while Utah took its game against USC down to the final play. Also, BYU edged Mississippi a week earlier.
Clearly, they’re both good enough to play with some talented teams, not good enough to shake up the world. Neither offense has been terribly impressive. BYU has scored just two offensive touchdowns all season. Utah was unimpressive against Montana State and totaled a mediocre 319 offensive yards against USC.
Right now, nobody’s accusing Mississippi, Texas or USC of being world-beaters, either.
So both BYU and Utah are good enough to play and win in the big stadiums but not so good that they can take things for granted. Fans of both teams can dial down their expectations just a little bit. No national champs in this state.
In a strange way, it might actually be more enjoyable: Not so much stress, a little more fun.
