Should Jake Heaps transfer?
There is no indication yet that BYU’s Jake Heaps has lost his starting job. But if he did, would he transfer?
A lot Cougar fans worry about that. After all, Heaps came into the program as the top-rated quarterback in America.
A similar story is playing out at Texas, where Longhorn QB Garrett Gilbert is planning to transfer. Gilbert lost his starting spot after two games and then had shoulder surgery. So should highly touted quarterbacks transfer the moment things get a little tough, or should they stick it out?
I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I’d transfer, if I could see the writing on the wall.
JAKE HEAPS
If you’re a third-string offensive lineman, I can see the advantage of sticking with a plan and building character. But if you’re like Heaps and Gilbert — top-rated quarterbacks coming out of high school — I wouldn’t blame them for transferring. If you think you’re good, and have confidence that you are the best player for the position, why wouldn’t you?
Seems to me that in any job, if you’re under appreciated by your boss and the situation isn’t likely to get better, it’s wise to look at other options. Ex-Cougar quarterback Drew Miller transferred to I-AA Montana after he lost his starting job at BYU. Miller went on to an All-America career with the Grizzlies.
DREW MILLER
If you think you’re the best player for the job, but you aren’t being used, transferring isn’t a matter of ego, it’s a matter of wanting to play. And a matter of knowing you can produce with someone else, if not the team you’re with.
In that light, I wouldn’t blame Heaps if he did leave BYU, if the Cougars gave his job to Riley Nelson.
Any opinions on the subject?
