Norm Chow hoping to meet Jerry Sloan

I guess it takes one to know one.

Even if you actually don’t know one another..

As I was speaking with Ute offensive coordinator Norm Chow on Tuesday, he mentioned that he felt that good coaches got the most out of what they were given. I told him Jerry Sloan had always done that with the Jazz. They never were the Showtime Lakers, but they didn’t try to be. All they were was one of the NBA’s best teams in the 1990s.

“I believe, to me, that’s what it takes to be a coach,” Chow said. “I always admired Jerry Sloan, by the way. One of my bucket list things is to meet the guy. But you do with what you have and don’t worry about what you don’t have.”

Chow went on to say, “I would love to meet Jerry Sloan, I’ve been a fan for years. I just admire the way he coaches and have tried to emulate that.”

When I said I could maybe introduce them by phone, Chow modestly said, “I don’t know if I’d dare.”

What I found interesting was the unmitigated respect Chow had for Sloan. Two coaches in different professions — but with similar philosophies. For some reason I’d enjoy seeing that introduction happen.
