It's BCS exclusion time again
Looks like it’s that time of year again.
Time to start crowding the mid-majors to the back of the room.
Nothing new here. Just an observation.
Boise State is 7-0. Yup. Back in the mix again. Or not. The remainder of its schedule is easy, except for the Nov. 12 game vs. TCU. So will the Broncos play in the national championship?
Not unless it’s in volleyball.
I’ve never been a fan of the BCS system. Here are just a couple of columns I’ve done on the whole fiasco.
At the same time, I’d be willing to change my position if the Broncos – or any other mid-major – ever gets to a BCS title game. But it’s more likely that all the serious mid-major teams will end up in big conferences before it’s all over, so the point could be moot.
Just this week, Stanford rose from No. sixth to fourth in the BCS standings while idle Boise State slipped for 4 to 5. Look for that to continue.
I’ll give the BCS credit for making it possible for non-AQ teams to play in BCS bowls. TCU, BSU, Utah and Hawaii have benefited from that system. But none has had the chance to play in the national championship game, despite being undefeated.
And no team from a non-AQ conference is ever going to.
The way I have it figured, the BCS rankings will make sure BSU is far enough down the pecking order that even if it goes undefeated, it won’t get in the title game. Even if everyone above BSU loses a game, the ever-popular “computer ranking” will always make sure the mid-majors are left out of the biggest game.
No wonder schools like Boise State are willing to look into ANY conference, even shaky ones like the Big East, in hopes of getting a fair chance. When you’re on a burning ship, even a leaky lifeboat is an option.
