Owners melting down on social media, too
Remember a long, long, long time ago when I noted that athletes were doing more damage to themselves via the social media than mainstream media could ever do?
Oh, wait, that was last week.
Anyway, I’m going to have to amend that.
I’m going to have to include owners, too. The latest meltdown came from Miami Heat owner Micky Arison, who’s Twitter comments have just cost him $500,000. The NBA levied the fine for remarks he made about the lockout, some in response to fans who sent him angry messages.
I think the NBA is acting silly by forcing adults – who keep the league afloat – to be quiet during the lockout. They’re wealthy, powerful, successful people. Being muzzled by a league that prospers off the owners seems backward to me.
I know, I know. It might interfere with negotiations.
As though they’re going smoothly, anyway.
Still, as I mentioned regarding players, the social media is doing a lot more damage than traditional reports. So from now on when a sports figure starts blaming the media, I’d just say he/she needs to check the facts. And point the finger where it belongs.
