Welcome back, Urban
I see where Urban Meyer says there’s no deal in place to coach at Ohio State, nothing is in stone, he’s spending some quality family time at Thanksgiving — end of discussion.
Except, of course, it isn’t the end of the discussion. Meyer is taking the job. I don’t know that from informed sources. I know it from the way Meyer operates.
In the interest of disclosure, I liked Meyer when he breezed through Utah. He was accessible and most of the time quite agreeable. But I also know that he carefully orchestrated his image in the media.
The other thing I know is that Meyer always denies he’s going someplace before leaving. He did it at Bowling Green. He did it at Utah. The same season he left Utah for Florida, Meyer said he wouldn’t leave as long as he got the resources he needed and he had the chance to win. He got that and left anyway.
That said, Utah fans have no reason to begrudge him. Meyer moved the Ute program vastly forward, added some things it didn’t have before, and has never bad-mouthed the school or the job since he left.
But just because he says nothing has happened with Ohio State doesn’t mean he isn’t taking the job. It was one of the three jobs that would have allowed him to break his contract with Utah without penalty. He was born in Ohio. He was a receivers coach at Ohio State. He’s been down this road before.
It’s a done deal.
