The pretend Urban?
I’ve said all along Urban Meyer would take the Ohio State job. I’ve also said Meyer can be disingenuous. Hence, he denied having a job offered to him at OSU, then held a press conference on Monday to announce, ahem, he had accepted the job.
But while I consider Meyer just an agenda-and-ego-driven guy, a Sporting News writer has something more pointed to say about him. He thinks the Buckeyes aren’t getting the Urban they bargained for.
I agree that Meyer was stretching credulity when he took “family” time off by working for a year at ESPN. I also agree that his health issues may not be over.
But I do think Meyer will ignite the Buckeyes. That’s what Meyer does best, is take programs with enough or more than enough talent and makes them great. He did it at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida. And while Ohio State’s problems are considerable, it’s not like Meyer won’t be able to get plenty of talent to play in Columbus.
And it’s not like he won’t be able to mold it into a championship level team. National championship, that is.
So as I found myself rolling my eyes at Meyer’s denials, last week, I also ended up agreeing, in a lot of ways, with the aforementioned columnist. Meyer isn’t above manipulating the media or anyone else in order to reach his goals. But that doesn’t mean he won’t continue doing what he does. He works at the highest levels.
It was a choice the Buckeyes had to make.
