Silence at Spectrum? Say it ain't so!

There is some debate regarding what the three-minute silent period by Utah State’s student section on Wednesday was about.

A report by Tony Jones in the Tribune said it was in protest of a letter of apology USU’s president sent to BYU. Apparently he was embarrassed at the catcalls made at BYU’s Brandon Davies during a previous game.

But others who were in the crowd at Wednesday’s game against Denver U. said that they were told they would be ejected if they chanted things like “Stupid!” at opposing players. So they just sat it out for awhile.

Either way, the Aggie fan base should get back to being itself — for the entire game.

I think the USU basketball crowd is easily the best in the western U.S., as good as any in the country. It always makes me laugh. The signs are clever, the chants infectious. I’ve seen some borderline posters they’ve held up at games, but nothing outright obscene. Wild Bill Sproat and his Chris Farley imitations always made it worth the drive up from Salt Lake.

But to me, the funniest material isn’t the most outrageous. Every time they chant “I believe that we will win!” in unison, I’m entertained.

And as the end nears, and they chant, “Winning team!” “Losing team!” I can’t look away.

So if officials are asking the Aggie fans to stop doing a few things, I say don’t worry about it. Even their G-rated material is great.
