Smith says football playoffs are coming

As one who has been at every level as a head coach, Weber State’s John L. Smith says there’s no doubt a BCS playoff is bound to happen.

The former Idaho, Utah State, Louisville and Michigan State coach said on Tuesday that “there’s so much money, there’s going to be a playoff.”

Smith, of course, is now at a FCS school, where playoffs are already a reality. He has also coached at USU and Louisville, where (at the time), they weren’t in automatic qualifier conferences. Then he was at Michigan State, which was. His most recent stop was as an assistant at Arkansas, also a big-time school.

Smith went on to say, “I really believe playoffs are going to come.”

He added that he actually likes the bowl system the way it is. It allows 35 teams to end the season on a winning note — something that won’t happen with playoffs.

“I love the bowl system,” he said. But he went on to say that “there are so many games, there is gong to be a playoff. It’s inevitable.”

At Smith’s introductory press conference on Tuesday, someone asked whether he plans to have his own team slogan. Former Weber coach Ron McBride espoused MAFU, which stood for mental toughness, attitude, fanatical effort and unity.

But when the questioner, a Weber State booster, couldn’t recall what MAFU stood for, Smith joked, “It must not be a very good motto if you can’t remember it.”
