Columnist (not me) catches TD pass

They say a person reveals himself under duress.

In that case, you don’t want to ever be in a foxhole with me.

At last Saturday’s Sun Bowl, I and other media members went down to the field for the final moments to await post-game interviews. Utah quarterback Jon Hays threw a long pass to Reggie Dunn. But the ball sailed far over Dunn’s head and out of bounds.

I was standing right where the pass was headed. This is where it gets embarrassing.

I ran like a jackrabbit.

Here’s the thing: I’ve seen too many blooper videos where the photographer, cheerleader or chain-mover doesn’t move out of the way and gets taken out on a sideline play. It doesn’t look good. I learned long ago when a sweep or a pass starts coming toward where I am on the sidelines, run first, ask questions later.

If you get hit, you’re a star on SportsCenter.

So when I saw the ball coming my way, I made like George Costanza in “Seinfeld” when he tramples the elderly and children to get away from a fire. Jake Scott of 1280-The Zone can verify my story. I think I hit him with an elbow as I ran. I also vaguely recall screaming for my mommy.

Meanwhile, Tribune columnist Kurt Kragthorpe just stayed where we were and snagged the pass — while holding a tape recorder in one hand. The ref told him nice catch. (That’s me in the green jacket signaling touchdown.)

I told Kurt he had amazingly soft hands for a fifty-something sports writer.

Anyway, it’s easy to see which columnist has a coach for a brother and which one bailed out on football in the ninth grade.

All I want to know is why he didn’t spike the ball.
