Should these BYU, Utah sports figures be honored?
First came the announcement that Arnie Ferrin, the former Ute All-America basketball player, would be inducted into the Pac-12 Hall of Honor.
Soon I started seeing snarky comments asking why Ferrin was being honored by a conference he never played in. Then came word that former BYU volleyball coach Elaine Michaelis is being inducted into the West Coast Conference Hall of Honor. Same thing. She never coached in the league.
It does seem a little weird to me that either of them would be in “someone else’s” hall. At the same time, I can see why they’re doing it. Suppose in 15 years, or 20, people start looking for great former coaches and athletes from the Pac-12. They can’t start by looking in the Mountain West, WAC or even Mountain States conferences. Those conferences won’t even exist.
The way it is right now, a visitor to the hall might look on the wall of honor and say, “Isn’t Utah in the Pac-12? How come it doesn’t have anyone in the Hall of Honor?” Same with the WCC.
So they get adopted into their new league.
Should they belong? I’m gonna give it a half-hearted thumbs up.
I’m just wondering what happens if BYU leaves the WCC for the Big 12? Can it take Elaine Michaelis along and install her in that Hall of Honor, too?
