The spirit of Rick Majerus

Rick Majerus would have been 66 this week, which dovetailed nicely with the fact Saint Louis University cracked the top 10 in college basketball.

He told John Canzano of The Oregonian in March 2012 that a top 10 ranking would occur at Saint Louis, too.

“We’ll be a Top 10 team in about three years,” Majerus told Canzano. “I did it at Ball State, did it at Utah, and we’re going to do it here.”

Saint Louis hasn’t been in the top 10 since 1964-65.

Majerus was great at elevating programs. I think that’s part of why he left Utah – he wasn’t going to take the Utes farther than he already had. It was time to take on another challenge.

With Utah basketball fighting back to respectability—it is playing No. 4 Arizona tonight — and the Billikens at 23-2, it reminded me of a column I wrote the day Majerus passed away in 2012. There was a soft side to Majerus. To read the story, please click here.
